Do I need infill for my synthetic grass application?
All turf needs some sort of infill. How much and which kind depends on:
- Installation Location
- Turf Thickness
Why is infill important?
The addition of infill helps the faux grass blades stand up and keep it's real look in high-traffic areas. Infill also gives you the feel of walking on real grass by emulating the impact absorption qualities of soil. It helps to weigh down the turf and helps keep the turf from getting wrinkles or ripples caused by movement.
What types of infill are available?
GOOD: Silica Sand
Aplications: For low traffic areas, hills, balconies, decks, thick turf, commercial or retail locations, driving ranges and open non-use fields.
Pros: It's inexpensive to purchase, located everywheren and easy to install.
Cons: The sand is angular (not round) and gets hard and hold some pet odors. Install between 1 to 2 lbs per SQFT.
BETTER: Rubber or Sand Rubber Mix
Applications: For lawns, high traffic locations, athletic fields, play grounds, in both commercial and residential applications.
Pros: Rubber is a very soft infill, it will not get to hard, it adds volume to the turf, it does a great job keeping the fiber up and in place and it's pretty easy to install. Because of its volume properties, one 50 lbs bag covers between 100 & 200 SQFT.
Cons: Rubber is hotter than sand only, it can transfer rubber dust onto clothes and shoes, holds some odors and does not kill any bacteria.
BEST: Durafill Sand
Applications: For any lawns, high traffic locations, athletic fields, play grounds, dog runs, pet training areas and play areas (kid & pet friendly).
Pros: Anti-microbial, will not absorb liquids, round shape for softer feel and will not damage the fibers in the turf. Safe for kids and pets!
Cons: It's more expensive than silica sand, it doesn't cover the volume that rubber covers, you may need a pad under the turf for play grounds or fields because of the fall rating. Install between 1 to 2 lbs per SQFT.
